Doug Fieger Dead at 57 - The Knack

Doug Fieger, founding member of “The Knack” and famous for his song “My Sharona” died this week after a battle with cancer, he was 57 years old.

Fieger, who lived most of his life in Woodland Hills, near Los Angeles, was born in Detroit, MI. He formed “The Knack” in 1978 in L.A. and the group quickly became a Sunset Strip club favorite. After one together Fieger co-wrote the bands hit “My Sharona” about a girl he dated for four years.

When speaking about that relationship with the Associated Press in 1994 Fieger said:

“I had never met a girl like her – ever,” adding “She induced madness. She was a very powerful presence. She had an insouciance that wouldn’t quit. She was very self-assured. … She also had an overpowering scent, and it drove me crazy.”

“My Sharona” stood atop the Billboard pop charts for six weeks and have long since been a radio staple.

According to the HuffingtonPost:

Fieger battled cancer for six years. In 2006 he underwent surgery to remove two tumors from his brain.

He is survived by a sister, Beth Falkenstein, and a brother, attorney Geoffrey Fieger of Southfield, Mich., who is best known for representing assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian.

A Los Angeles memorial service for friends and family is being planned.
