The 58 year old coach was previously treated for prostate cancer in 2005 and has led the Nuggests to the second best record in the Western Conference this season, while coaching the West’s All Star team this past Sunday.
In a statement to reporters Karl said:
“The support I’ve received from my family, the Nuggets organization and my friends in the basketball community already has been incredible.”
According to team management, they have known about the coaches condition for weeks and they are prepared to support him when he steps away for “a period of time” to receive treatment.
Karl just last week agreed to a contract extension through the 2010-2011 campaign, at a time when the team knew of his cancer diagnosis, now that’s confidence in your head coach.
