F-22 Raptor Wreckage Found in Alaska; Pilot Still Missing
Last night, an F-22 Raptor went missing. The stealth fighter jet was on a routine training mission when it lost contact with the Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base near Anchorage, Alaska. Fears that the plane had crashed were confirmed today when authorities spotted the wreckage of the F-22 approximately 100 miles North of Anchorage.
A rescue team was dispatched to the area. As of this writing, the location of the pilot is unknown.
MSNBC reports that the Alaska National Guard was combing the area with three helicopters today. Authorities are not sure if the pilot ejected from the F-22 Raptor, or if he is still in the wreckage.
Col. Jack McMullen, 3rd Wing commander, said in a release:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this missing airman, and we thank all Alaskans for their continued support and prayers during this trying time. Finding the missing pilot is our top priority.”
The only person aboard the F-22 Raptor was the pilot. Authorities have not identified the pilot, but said that the pilot belonged to Elmendorf’s 3rd Wing.
