Soldier Carrying Assault Rifle Has to Give Up Nail Clippers

U.S. News

Soldier With Assault Rifle and Smoking Bullet

In my best ever Chandler Bing voice: Can airport security be any lamer?

Why yes, young Skywalker, they can. To wit: A soldier was  returning from Afghanistan on a charter flight. All the troops went through a security check as they left Baghram Air Field.

They all passed through full body scanners (gasp) and had their bags inspected by bomb-sniffing dogs.

But, BUT, when the plane stopped in Indianapolis to drop 100 National Guard members off, the local TSA said all the armed soldiers needed to be searched again.

A soldier wrote an email to RedState.com saying:

It’s probably important to mention that we were ALL carrying weapons. All of us were carrying actual assault rifles, and some of us were also carrying pistols,”

None of the weapons were loaded. But when one TSA agent found nail clippers on  a soldier, blammo, gone, el confiscato!

The soldier reported the agent said:

You can’t take those on the plane. They can be used as a weapon.

The soldier then pointed out the obvious. EVERYONE had a pistol or assault rifle the agent said…  (Wait for it)

Yeah but you can’t use it to take over the plane. You don’t have bullets.

He gave up the clippers, but kept his assault rifle, and apparently the TSA agent was happy because the flight was allowed to continue.

I have scoured the web for some confirmation or corroboration of this story and I haven't been able to find any -- it seems the single source of the story is Eric Erickson on Red State and he says he printed it second hand without any questions. It sounds like he did not interview any of the airport staff or other soldiers. Printing one person's account of an incident is not journalism and until some responsible reporting is done I can't help but doubt this incident happened, at least as recounted so far.

okay.. my bad, they were dropping off 100 soldiers.. but still it was a plane load of soldiers, that's usually what Chartered means and they would not be allowed to carry their weapons on any other type of flight. So the rest still stands.. just got a bit carried away with laughing!!!! Does this mean that we can now be arrested for attempted murder or assult if we whip out our nail clippers in front of a cop?

Lord help us all. This is SO pathetic. Listen, this was a CHARTERED FLIGHT. Which means ONLY the 100 SOLDIERS were on board the flight. ALL had weapons (unloaded of course) and the IDIOT TSA agent says this ONE SOLDIER's nail clippers were a threat and could be used to take over the plane? Is he for real? If that ONE SOLDIER decided to take over the plane with a pair of nail clippers don't you think he would have the other 99 on his A$$!!!!! SHEESH!!!

I have a couple of questions. Where were this soldiers officers, and why didn't they set the TSA agent straight? Where was this TSA's supervisors, who allowed this nonsense. And, if this did really happen, does this TSA agent and his supervisor still have a job? If so, why?

It's in the message.
It's in the message.

And this soldier is made to feel good about defending his country? Young onlookers (kids back home, siblings etc.) will be eager to protect and defend this nation? The TSA is an egregious example but the government and to a certain extent, the society the represent, are making all of us who served in the military regret it. Sincerely, Robert H. Galloway

A soldier certainly doesn't need nail clippers to take over an airplane. He or she can use their bare hands. What's next - handcuff all soldiers and martial artists / boxers / wrestlers so they can't use their "weapons" to take over an airplane?

Well, I guess the TSA agent liked the nailclippers and he needed a new pair so he confiscated the clippers to bring home for his own use. I wonder what happens with all this stuff they confiscate. Probably selling everything on ebay or craigs list

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of!! I think that TSA agent has issues and needs to be fired! I just flew to South Africa and back with nail clippers in my carry on bag and went through security several times. No one said a word about the nail clippers.

So shameful and preposterous. These are our heroes. No one who is on active duty should be searched or scanned. They are protecting us from the very killers who want to destroy us.

This is a bunch of B S but listen up everyone. This is happening now to blow a smokescreen over what going on in Washington during this lame duck session, it's a distraction, pay attention to what they(the idiots who we replaced) do now, they're P Oed and don't give a rats a** what they do to We the People keep an eye on them and the new congress will be more co-operative to help us do away with TSA BS maybe eliminate the TSA altogether

Let's be logical and not criticize Bush for something he no longer can defend. Maybe he sponsered it but it became what it is much more recently. And, let's face it. TSA has become a sham. They are here to make us "think" we are more safe. Do you feel more safe? I do not. The underwear bomb was used once so now we're looking for underwear bombs. The terrorists aren't that dumb, they won't try that one for some time. And until a few days ago we were scanning pilots!? A pilot doesn't need a bomb, he can just fly his plane into the river, for God's sake. Over the weekend several of us went to another city. One of the women in our group was selected for a scan, than pulled aside for a pat-down. The woman TSA officer was broad-shouldered, looked more lik a man and had a haircut like a man's. Our friend exited the pat-down booth in tears. She said she felt like she was only pulled aside so that this Lesbian security officer could cop a feel. And she was powerless to object. And men have to have their crotch felt. This isn't security, it's simple molestation and is illegal, or at least is unless your an agent of the government. Our friend filed a complaint with the airline and we've all written our Congressmen and Senators. In Israel, you can be interviewed twice and not even know it before you get selected for a scan or a pat-down. They're pretty sure that you may be a problem long before you get to the scan. Here we're going to select Grandma for a TSA mammogram and a child for a strip search! And by the way, while our friend was being molested a man who looked likke he might be middle eastern was waved right on through. As debbie said, God Help This Country. We've give the rights to personally assualt us and they have 15 minutes of training. Even an ex-convict can get a job with TSA. Hell, it pays almost the same as flipping burgers! I guess we should be glad none of the soldiers were carrying toothpicks, too. The combination of nail clippers and toothpicks, oh, wow, how much more dangerous can you get!???!!!!???

I wish the article had stated whether or not the soldiers also had bayonets. I would expect they did as they are standard equipment with rifle toters.

I would like to know who has caught or killed the most terrorist, The soldier or the moron TSA agent. Most of the TSA agents are wantabes. They do not have the courage, the strength, the ability mentally or physically to be a soldier. The same goes for those people in the white house in DC. None have the common cents to recognize a terrorist, but they can strip search a 6 year old and scare other children flying our airways. I do not fly anymore nor do I go into building with that type of security.

Wow..... Ok, do any of these people realize that soldiers are trained "weapons" of a country? haha If he really wanted to take over the plane, he had his fellow soldiers - other trained "weapons" - to help. He doesnt even NEED the gun! But no, the nail clippers are a threat to national security... The TSA has gone WAY overboard with these ridiculous regulations! Now that these screens are put in airports, how many terrorists do you think will actually put a bomb in their underwear again?? um... none! Because lets face it.... The average terrorist is obviously smarter than the TSA..... It's a hard fact to face, but there it is. Seriously. We are one step behind. Not to mention the fact that how many plane bombs have we had since 9/11??

For sure two word that do not go together is Government and Intelligence. The TSA is just another shadow government unto it self. Personally if I could all these shadow governments would be abolished or their funding be stopped. This TSA has not found anything of terrorists, except maybe an old woman, young child or someone who has to carry a urine bag. The TSA like the rest of the Shadow Government is a waste of taxpayer funds. Just think we could balance the budget by cutting their funds to zero. All those like FDA (which kills 5000 people per month with bad poison drugs they approve), other FTC, EPA, FCC and more agency who waste money, kill people or with their Gestapo Swat teams raid and terrorize Innocent families and their children. Where is our corrupt and morally bankrupted elected official. I will tell you they are there in their office with their hand out to get the bribery money from the lobbyist.

What a crook of $hi+. When we came back from Iraq, we were all in uniform, and carrying our weapons, LCE, and on a commercial flight. They didn't even make us go through the metal detectors. That was in Philadelphia though. I guess they have more intelligent workers there. This is typical stupidity by TSA workers, maybe the soldier should have given the TSA worker a butt stock to the head manuever to try an knock some sense into him...

Uh, for the TSA agent.... nail clippers are NOT on the TSA list of prohibited items.

If the TSA agent wanted to confiscate 'all weapons' which might be used to commandeer an airplane, he would have had to cutt off each soldiers hands and feet...and suck out their brains. Is that next? The sucking out of brains has been accomplished on the TSA folks so it seems. What a travesty of unconstitutional actions we are witnessing; when will the American populace wake up and say ENOUGH! ?

We need to get rid of the present administration and the idiot running it. The TSA agent who took the nail clippers because they can be used as a weapon. The assault rifle cannot be because they didn't have any ammunition. That idiot is so stupid he dosen't know that you can beat some one's head in with a rifle. I wonder where they get these dodos. I suppose they are no worse than the head dodo of TSA.

Tina...... I am EX Military and the Idiots in charge has already starting to refer to us as POTENTIAL DOMESTIC TERRORIST. They are afraid of us because we are trained, and many of us has faced the enemy in combat situations. Also a large number of us are starting to realize they are not abiding by their SWORN OATHS, that was the same as the one we swore to up on entering OUR MILITARY. Congressional, VP, Cabinet, and Military Oath of Office I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God. Perhaps they are afraid unlike them we will up hold and abide by our oaths we swore.

Burnett8883

sorry to inform you of this, the "present administration" as you so lovingly refer to them... has NOTHING to do with setting TSA policies or procedures... let alone the stupidity and arrogance of one SINGE TSA agent... just thought you and the rest of hte people out there who aperently missed the day in school in 7th grade when they went over how the whole "gubment" thing here in the US works (oh wait... they teach it EVERY YEAR from 5th grade through 12th grade),... so yeah... the PRESIDENT does not decide EVERYTHING in this country and does not have the power to change everything people dont like... their are two other branches of govenment and most of the problems right now are coming out of the legislative branch... if you don't like how the government is being run call your senators and congressmen... they are the PRIMARY reason for the current state of our country
