The FBI this morning arrested two men on charges of allegedly stealing and handing out more than 100,00 Apple iPad users’ email addresses. NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg was apparently among the potential high-profile hacking victims.
According to Reuters...
Investigators accused Daniel Spitler and Andrew Auernheimer of using an “account slurper” to conduct a “brute force” attack over five days last June, to extract data about iPad users who accessed the Internet through AT&T Inc’s 3G network.
The case has been filed in federal court in Newark, N.J. Federal prosecutors charged each defendant, who according to Reuters are apparently associated with a group of “self-professed Internet trolls,” with one count of fraud and one count of conspiracy to access a computer without authorization. The men could face up to five years behind bars and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
Apple has yet to issue a statement about the incident.
