The King’s Speech Earns 12 Oscar Nods; Complete List of 2011 Oscar Nominations
The King’s Speech has been nominated for 12 Oscars.
The nominations were announced by president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – which organises the awards – Tom Sherak and Mo’Nique, who was named best support actress at last year’s ceremony for her role in Precious, in Los Angeles this morning.
Among the prizes The King’s Speech is up for include the prestigious best picture, where it will vie against Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit and Winter’s Bone.
As expected, Colin Firth is nominated in the best actor category. He has already won the equivalent Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Britain’s King George VI and his efforts to overcome a stutter. The accolade will go to either Colin or Javier Bardem for Biutiful, Jeff Bridges for True Grit, Jesse Eisenberg for The Social Network, and James Franco for 127 Hours.
Natalie Portman’s portrayal of troubled ballerina Nina Sayers in Black Swan has seen her win a place in the best actress category. She faces stiff competition from Annette Bening in The Kids Are All Right, Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole, Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone and Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine.
The King’s Speech also triumphed in the supporting actor and actress categories, with its stars Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush both getting mentions.
Competing against Helena are Amy Adams and Melissa Leo both for The Fighter, Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit and Jacki Weaver for Animal Kingdom.
Director of The King’s Speech Tom Hooper is in the running for the best director prize, alongside Darren Aronofsky for Black Swan, Joel & Ethan Coen for True Grit, David O. Russell for The Fighter and David Fincher’s The Social Network.
Although The King’s Speech leads the way with 12 nominations, True Grit is hot on its heels with ten. Inception and The Social Network both garnered eight nods, while The Fighter and 127 Hours are up for six. Black Swan, Winter’s Bone and Toy Story 3 are all in with a chance of winning five awards.
The 83rd annual Academy Awards will be hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco. The ceremony will be held at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood on February 27, and will be televised in over 200 countries.
Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Marisa Tomei and Oprah Winfrey will all be presenting awards on the night.
