Amazon has a big problem on their hands, the Kindle Store is full of spam and it’s getting worse. If you’ve recently published a book of your own on Amazon you may have realized how hard it has become to find your title within the Kindle store, according to an online report the company’s “self-publish” feature has led may users to release crappy books with no substance or pirate books under their own names.

Spammers, catching on to the lucrative potential of the program have went so far as to re-publish out of copyright books under new names and even change details of copyright books while passing them off as their own with a new title and a new cover.

As UberGizmo points out:

Most of these spam books are poor copies of the original material, with badly formatted text, missing sections, and basically not worth the money spent to purchase them. The worst part about this is that the spam books are topping the charts.

Amazon now faces a major hurdle, figuring out how to stop spammers without hiring thousands of individuals to personally examine each book submitted to the marketplace. The company could start by cross checking currently available books with the content of newly submitted books.

Regardless of what Amazon officials attempt, spam books appearing on their “Top Lists” is not a good sign of trust for readers who pay good money for an item they only own in terms of bits and bytes.
