DARPA 100-Year Starship Study Encourages Free Flow Of Ideas

DARPA, the R&D sector of the U.S. Military wants to make interstellar space travel a reality in the next 100 years and to accomplish that goal they are offering a $500,000 reward this fall to the person or group who can create the best plans to make that dream a reality.
The project isn’t just for rocket scientists either, the group is encouraging sci-fi writers, astrophysicists and others to get involved by hosting a kick off event in Florida during the month of September.
The 100-Year Starship Study doesn’t just want to fly off into space like an episode of Star Trek, the military hopes a variety of new products will be created as well.
According to a DARPA rep:
“‘Products’ doesn’t mean physical products, but might be a new computer algorithm, a new kind of physics, a new set of mathematics, a new philosophical or religious construct.”
While that rep adds:
“What Jules Verne postulated in terms of a cannon firing people to the moon is about as impractical and unrealistic as you could get, but he inspired people to think about building space vehicles” while adding, “That’s the motivation of the 100-Year Starship Study.”
What ideas do you have for an interstellar program?
