FBI Confirms that 9/11 First Responders Are Not Terrorists
In order to claim medical benefits, the workers at Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks had to undergo a terrorist background check. The shameful check conducted by the FBI has been completed, and none of the 60,000 Ground Zero responders have been connected to any terrorist organization.
The James Zadroga 9/11 Health And Compensation Law re-opened a compensation fund for 9/11 workers, but the Compensation Law required first responders to pass a terrorist background check.
Representative Peter King said:
”It was shameful, and it put a cloud over extraordinarily good people for no reason.”
The Wall Street Journal notes that the terrorist check isn’t completely finished. The FBI will continue to check Ground Zero workers as more become eligible for benefits.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler, said:
“Did anyone really think the heroes of 9/11 were terrorists? It’s absurd. It was a waste of money, especially because it wasn’t a simple thing to do, because you had to do the checks without violating the privacy of the first responders.”
Rep. Cliff Stearns, who introduced the legislation requiring a background check, said that he was “encouraged that so far there have been no matches to the watch list.”
