ImageDaily Deal Media reports that savvy eCommerce merchants were able to capitalize on the Queen of England’s Diamond Jubilee. Universal Web Consulting educates its clients in similar marketing tactics.

Over June 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, the United Kingdom and the rest of the world celebrated their Queen’s 60th anniversary on the throne. In an article for Daily Deal Media, Michael Essany wrote that this “Diamond Jubilee celebration” drove online purchases across several digital shopping platforms this past May.

The British Rail Consortium provided data saying the British increasingly choose eCommerce over other shopping methods. Meanwhile, research from accounting firm KPMG LLP indicates that online shopping sales spiked in May 2012, particularly in the days that led to the celebration. All told, says Essany, online shopping sales for May were 12.4 percent over what they were in April.

Hostway’s post-Jubilee report stated, “the sharpest growth figures came from shopping via mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, with some retailers encouraging shoppers to use these items as part of their in-store experience.”

Independent business analyst Mike Randazzo explained this phenomenon to Daily Deal Media. “It’s important to recognize the increasing mobile sophistication of European advertisers,” he said. “Online sales didn’t magically explode just because of the Queen’s anniversary.”

“Savvy marketers capitalized on the mood of the masses by targeted sales and opportunities linked in some fashion to the PR-power of the Diamond Jubilee,” Randazzo continued. “It’s just like a restaurant discounting its pizza during February’s [Big Game]. This is the phenomenon we saw in the U.K. last week and it worked really well for the online merchants smart enough to tap into the festivities.”

Universal Web Consulting, or UWCCorp, teaches its clients how to wield this strategy, and others, using their eCommerce sites. They recognize that following current events and marketing accordingly can strongly bolster an eCommerce business. Holidays, anniversaries, and events like the aforementioned [Big Game] can increase sales astronomically, while boosting the economy.

These types of marketing techniques are important as eCommerce merchants gain their footing in the industry. They won’t take away the difficulties inherent in the industry, but a consulting firm like UWCCorp can help new sites develop a strategy. It can prove as lucrative for a business as it has in Europe.

Indeed, says Randazzo, European eCommerce has done better than expected in recent months. “A lot of uncertainty remains about economic conditions in Europe,” he concluded, “but the effect of this uncertainly has been a boon to eCommerce, not a deterrent. When the public begins growing conservative with their cash, they don’t stop spending, they look for bargains more aggressively. In almost every instance, this circumstance benefits eCommerce.”
