Marijuana Smoke and Lung Cancer – Miles Arnone Urges Users to Get Facts Straight
Many smokers of marijuana are under the impression that pot is not as harmful as smoking cigarettes. However, lung caner awareness activists like Miles Arnone cite that ongoing research disproves this notion.
When marijuana smoking is up for discussion, talk typically surrounds the legality of the behavior. However, Miles Arnone and other lung cancer awareness supporters think other issues should be discussed. Namely, the health aspects of smoking marijuana.
According to ongoing research, smoking one joint a day is just as bad as smoking an entire pack of cigarettes. That’s right: marijuana smokers are sucking down 20 cigarettes in one go. Many do not realize this, and continue to smoke marijuana regularly.
Smoking marijuana, in action, is very similar to cigarette smoking. Some speculate that this misleads people to think that one joint is similar to one cigarette. Smoking marijuana involves breathing in smoke and other vapors from the heated cannabis flowers and leaves. Many people see marijuana as an enjoyable and safe activity.
The number of those smoking marijuana continues to increase. According to surveys in the UK, more than one third of UK citizens under 24 smoke marijuana. It’s staggering that 88% of those smokers think that it is less dangerous than smoking tobacco.
Obviously, smoking of any sort increases the smoker’s risk of lung afflictions. However, the British Lung Foundation reports that smoking one joint a day increased the risk of cancer by 7%. The Foundation suggests this results from a few things. Many marijuana smokers rarely use filters. Additionally, marijuana smokers often combine marijuana with tobacco.
They also draw deeper and longer breaths. Puffs of a joint are held four times as long and are two-thirds larger. As such, smokers receive four times as much tar than cigarette smokers. The amount of carbon monoxide inhaled is five times as much.
All smoke, including marijuana, contains carcinogenic material. Due to this, smokers of all kinds put themselves at risk of cancer.
Many are fighting to alert smokers of the dangers of marijuana smoking. The behavior obviously leads to serious health problems. Researchers continue to discover more and more reasons why marijuana smoking’s detriments should outweigh the enjoyment received.
