A rally recently took place in the Joe Chillura courthouse square in downtown Tampa. It was sponsored by the Tampa Builders and Florida Home Builders Associations, and the National Association of Home Builders. Homeownership is vital to the economy and families across America. Six hundred Floridians who wanted to reinforce that point attended the rally. Also in attendance were the republican and democratic state representatives, and the county board commissioner. These officials, as well as the Tampa mayor, all spoke at the event.

Speakers and crowds asked for initiatives towards better American homeownership. “Today we are demanding that Policymakers in Washington fix housing in America,” said county commissioner Ken Hagan. He continued by stressing the importance of the mortgage interest deduction.

Many agree that the situation isn’t getting the attention it deserves. The public knows the housing market needs to be improved, but they aren’t sure of how to do it, or where to start.

The wide array of attendees speaks for the cause itself. Home owners, small business owners, church groups, real estate agents, and civil rights groups all showed their support. Some speakers called home ownership ‘the fabric our country was founded on,’ toting it as the highlight of our freedoms. NAHB chairman Barry Rutenberg, who served as emcee, said “Homeownership is the foundation of the American Dream.”

Despite the popularity of the rally, most experts agree that banks are still weary to lend. However, that’s no reason to give up on the American Dream.
