Dressage riders and trainers have many obligations to their horses. Perhaps the biggest obligation is keeping their horses healthy and safe. Rider and trainer Janet Nagar knows full well the importance of her horse Fhanton’s health. Fhantom is 11 years’ old and is a Hanoverian gelding.

Prior to receiving recent treatment, Fhantom’s health was in decline, according to Nagar. Nagar promptly took Fhantom to Golden Rule Equine Services where she saw Dr. Stephanie Simonson. Dr. Simonson noticed Fhantom’s lack of energy, tight musculature, and asymmetrical muscle movement.

Dr. Simonson did not rush into a diagnosis. After a thorough analysis of Fhantom, she brought up Polysaccharide Myopathy (Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy). In essence, Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy results in extreme muscle discomfort in horses. This includes muscle contractions, an unwillingness to change position and abnormal muscling.

Dr. Simonson noticed how imbalanced Fhantom’s feet were, possibly due to the horse’s farrier work. She addressed the foot issued first but then realized she had to perform more treatment. Dr. Simonson and Nagar deliberated as to whether Fhantom needed acupuncture treatment. After some weighing of the pros and cons, they opted to go ahead with the procedure.

From the first day of treatment, Dr. Simonson’s aim was to make Fhantom comfortable. She coupled the acupuncture treatments with chiropractic operations. She wanted to ensure the horse’s muscle conditions were addressed properly.

Even after the very first treatment, Fhantom was showing signs of positive progress. Since then, Fhantom has improved. Dr. Simonson continually checks up on Fhantom on a two-week basis. She ensured to keep tabs on both the muscle conditions and the chiropractic issues. Nagar and Fhantom are now riding together again.

Nagar (and Fhantom) are thankful to Dr. Simonson for her expertise. Dr. Simonson’s thorough and expert technique saved Fhantom’s health. Rider and trainer Dr. Cesar Parra applauds Dr. Simonson for her masterful treatment of the horse.
