While Kate Moss was working toward the fame she enjoys today, she suffered a major breakdown that she revealed the details of in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.
Moss rose to fame in the early 90s, and one of her first major gigs was a sexy underwear shoot for Calvin Klein. Interestingly, her partner in the shoot was actor Mark Wahlberg, though at that time, he was known by the handle “Marky Mark” and as a musician. He was rising to fame himself with his successful single “Good Vibrations” by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.
So, back before Wahlberg found fame as an actor and Moss earned recognition as a model, the two did a shoot for Calvin Klein which took an emotional toll on the young Moss. Though she is now 38-years-old, Moss recalls the pressure of the shoot, saying that she was overwhelmed in part by her unfamiliarity with the modelling field.
“I had a nervous breakdown when I was 17 or 18, when I had to go and work with Marky Mark and Herb Ritts,” Moss confessed.
“It didn’t feel like me at all. I felt really bad about straddling this buff guy. I didn’t like it. I couldn’t get out of bed for two weeks. I thought I was going to die. I went to the doctor, and he said, ‘I’ll give you some Valium,’ and Francesca Sorrenti, thank God, said, ‘You’re not taking that.’ It was just anxiety.”
Talking about the modelling field in that day, Moss recalled:
“Nobody takes care of you mentally. There’s a massive pressure to do what you have to do. I was really little, and I was going to work with Steven Meisel. It was just really weird—a stretch limo coming to pick you up from work. I didn’t like it. But it was work, and I had to do it.”
Moss revealed that the primary reason for her discomfort was her inexperience and the pressure to pose semi-nude. Additionally, she felt that her breasts were too small and was very self-conscious of a dubiously placed mole.
Moss revealed that she was coerced into booking the gig, or else “we’re not going to book you again.” After agreeing to the shoot, she said she would “lock [herself] in the toilet and cry and then come out and do it.”
She also revealed that the incident occurred prior to her highly-publicized relationship with actor Johnny Depp. The two shared a relationship between 1994 and 1998, and were engaged for several months before ultimately breaking up. She confessed that the split devastated her, and that there were “years and years of crying” afterwards. The now-49-year-old Depp has had a number of high-profile relationships throughout his career, among them: Sherilyn Fenn, Winona Ryder, and Moss.
