International boxing superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is a hero in his native Phillipines. However, hero didn’t do so great this past weekend when he was knocked out during his fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, according to The Huffington Post.

Pacquiao’s mother couldn’t fathom the thought of her son losing, so Dionesia Pacquiao said the loss was because of her son’s recent switch from Catholicism to a Protestant sect.

“That’s what he gets for changing his religion,” Dionisia Pacquiao said in an interviw, according to

The defeated boxer had previously worn his Catholic faith on his sleeve, reports Boxing analyst, Ronnie Nathanielsz, said to the news site that some “rituals” seemed to bring a special significance to the boxer’s bouts.

Nathanielsz said:

“In the past, he put the rosary around his neck and prayed solemnly in one corner.”

Dionisia Pacquiao told television program GMA 7 that Pacquiao’s new “Protestant pastors” distracted the boxer by making him study the bible too much so he lost sleep and in return lost the fight to Marquez, reports Yahoo!.

“Why did they take my son?” said Dionisia, “when he was quiet and was a champion when he belonged to his former religion?”

Fans and local journalists responded to Dionisia Pacquiao’s comments, they ran to twitter and added their views.

One person said:

“Some are blaming Pacquiao’s loss since he abandoned the Roman Catholic..God got angry daw.. Always remember, God is not self-centered.”

Another said:

“Kibitzers blame Pacquiao’s loss on his decision “‘to forsake rosary, sign of the cross.’”

The Philippine Star’s Bobit S. Avila said that he received texts from others in the country, saying religion was also blamed on the loss.

In a recent interview with ESPN The Magazine, Manny Pacquiao talked with journalist Jeremy Schaap about several topics.

Pacquiao’s religion is also discussed in the interview.

Schaap said, “[Trainer Freddie] Roach has said you’ve become more religious, and he’s concerned that will affect the way you fight. How do you respond to that concern?”

“It doesn’t bother my boxing,” said Pacquiao.

Schaap added, “You’re the same boxer you were”

In response Pacquio said, “Yes.”

Do you think if Pacquiao slept more and studied the bible less he could have won the fight? Or is Pacquiao’s mother just looking for an easy way out by using excuses?
