Jay-Z isn’t only one of biggest names in hip-hop, he’s also proving himself to be quite the savvy entrepreneur. In Kanye West’s 2005 Grammy winning “Diamonds From Sierra Leone” remix, Jay-Z claims in his lyrics, “I’m not a businessman. I’m a business, man.” And it’s true, Jay-Z is a man of many interests. He’s not only a record producer and CEO of a music label, he also owns a piece of the National Basketball Association’s Brooklyn Nets.
On Tuesday, Jay-Z released an announcement that proves he’s an even bigger business, (man). Jay-Z, aka Shawn Carter, announced that he was not only opening his own sports agency, but his first client would be Yankees star Robinson Cano, who Jay-Z stole from the most powerful agent in baseball.
“Roc Nation Sports” is what Jay-Z is calling his latest branch of Roc Nation, his “full-service entertainment company.” Roc Nation has guided artists like Rihanna, Shakira and M.I.A. from demo tapes to multiple platinum records. Obviously, Roc Nation Sports wasn’t created without Jay-Z pulling a few strings with his famous friends. Roc Nation Sports is actually teamed up with “Creative Artists Agency,” which is one of the top Hollywood agencies, and this allows the organization to have superior negotiating authority. Also at the announcement, the spokesman for Roc Nation Sports, Ron Berkowitz, mentioned that Jay-Z has very recently been temporarily licensed to represent professional baseball players.
It’s no surprise that Jay-Z is interested in becoming more involved in sports. In an interview, the rapper mentioned that he’s always been interested in sports and that this new step is nothing more than a natural progression. Plus, Jay-Z is man of money, and there’s a lot of money in the world of sports management. You can just ask his partner, Creative Artists. Even though the agency brings in billions of dollars with huge movie stars like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, they’ve recently taken on as many as 800 different athletes. Their most recent addition was baseball player Buster Posey who signed a $167 million deal with the San Francisco Giants.
Experts say that Jay-Z is a major investment for the sports division of Creative Artists. Jay-Z carries a mannerism and profile that lawyers or agents could never portray. Like many major athletes, Jay-Z came from a humble beginning and now he makes a lot of money, with women chasing him everywhere. What else could a major athlete want?
