Dr. Austin shares his knowledge on how some surprising foods can actually work to improve oral health and even brighten a smile.

Dr. Austin explains that food does not only help bodies on the inside. What people eat can affect the color of their teeth. By making dietary changes, many patients have enjoyed more brilliant, healthy smiles. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry agrees. Boston.com cites Dr. Shawn Frawley, an AACD member and cosmetic dentist. Dr. Frawley says that gums and teeth can shine a light on the condition of the body and health. In turn, what people consume can contribute to the health of their teeth.

Many people know that drinking coffee and tea, or smoking, can lead to discoloration of the teeth. Furthermore, the AACD explains that nearly 100 percent of adults believe that a healthy smile is a social must. In addition, nearly 75 percent believe that a poor smile can prove detrimental to their careers.

In order to enhance the health and brilliance of teeth, people can alter their diet. Dr. Gordon Trent Austin explains which foods can make a dramatic impact on oral health, and even help create a whiter, brighter smile.

Ginger

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, which help support oral health. Periodontal disease is inflammatory and can cause bone loss in the mouth. Ginger can help fight the inflammation and support a healthier oral environment.

Pineapples

This fruit contains bromelain, an enzyme that is a natural stain remover. Dr. Frawley explains that it also works to loosen plaque that accumulates on teeth. Dr. Gordon Trent Austin insists this is highly important for oral health.

Plaque can create acidic materials that could wear down tooth enamel. Other tart fruits, such as oranges, can also help to naturally clean teeth. However, Dr. Trent warns against putting highly acidic foods directly on teeth. The extreme acid levels in foods like lemons could end up doing more harm than good.

Basil

This herb is a naturally occurring antibiotic. Therefore, it can reduce levels of bacteria in the mouth. Dr. Gordon Trent Austin explains that basil contains essential oils that limit the growth of these detrimental organisms.

Carrots

Vitamin A is present in carrots, and is needed to promote healthy tooth enamel. Furthermore, eating raw carrots can increase saliva content in the mouth. Dr. Trent says that saliva secretion is the mouth’s natural cleansing system. It helps to wash away food particles. He also says that eating most crunchy foods, like celery or apples, will have the same effect.

Sesame seeds

These tiny seeds can essentially scrub teeth. Dr. Gordon Trent Austin says that by consuming coarse, small foods, people can naturally scrub away plaque buildup. Furthermore, sesame seeds are also high in calcium, which can help strengthen bones and teeth.

Cheese

Cheese can help protect the mouth from high levels of acid, which can have damaging effects. Its high concentrations of phosphorus, calcium, and protein can guard the mouth against existing acids. Furthermore, the phosphorus and calcium help to repair teeth, as well.

AARP reports that lactic acid, found in other dairy products, can also help protect teeth. It refers to a study published in Dentistry. The journal reported that children who ate yogurt four times each week had fewer instances of tooth decay.

Onions

Sulfur-based compounds in onions can reduce dangerous oral bacteria. However, cooking them will decrease their effectiveness, so they are best eaten raw. For those who do not like onions, Dr. Gordon Trent Austin says garlic has the same compounds and offers similar effects.

Broccoli

Broccoli is high in iron. Dr. Austin says this iron can help build a protective barrier that is resistant to acid. Therefore, it helps to guard tooth enamel, and promotes healthier, stronger teeth.

Salmon

Salmon is high in calcium, but also in vitamin D. This vitamin is important in maintaining healthy bones, as well as healthy teeth.

Strawberries

Dr. Gordon Trent Austin says that, although strawberries may stain fingers, they actually whiten teeth. This fruit contains malic acid, which can help brighten a smile. A common way to use them for whitening is to mash them in a bowl and apply them to the teeth. After a few minutes, remove the strawberries, rinse with water, and floss and brush like normal.

Baking Soda

According to AARP, a 2008 study revealed that baking soda-based toothpastes are more effective than traditional pastes in removing plaque. Dr. Austin says that occasionally brushing with baking soda and water can help remove stains, as well.

Despite the foods people eat, the best thing they can do for a healthier and whiter smile is brushing and flossing regularly. Dr. Gordon Trent Austin recommends brushing and flossing after each meal of the day. If people cannot do so, he urges them to at least brush and floss twice daily.

Doing this can reduce the risk of tooth decay, or contraction of gum disease. It also helps to remove plaque from teeth before it gives the mouth a yellow tint. According to Discovery Health, nearly 50 percent of Americans do not floss. Dr. Austin urges patients and readers to never overlook the importance of flossing.

Furthermore, good oral hygiene is possibly linked with reduced risk of health issues, such as heart disease or stroke. Dr. Gordon Trent Austin says that of all the health problems that people face, those involving oral health are some of the most preventable, and people should never underestimate the power of simple brushing and flossing.
