Chinese astronauts enjoy many normal foods when in space, foods that include, chicken, fish, breads and even desserts, but now it has been revealed they also eat a less desired U.S. food, dogs.

According to a book written by Yang Liwei, a Chinese Commander:

“There’s no need to keep it a secret. Actually, we ate quite normal food”—braised chicken, steamed fish and dog”

Liwei told the Telegraph that the same diet was used when China performed their first space walk last year.

According to his book, the dogs were part of a special nutrition routine put together by Chinese nutritionist and that the dog meat was purchased from special suppliers in Beijing.

This new revelation has angered animal rights groups, Jill Robinson, founder of Animals Asia released the following statement:

“Yang Liwei is a role model for so many young people and he is one of China’s greatest heroes,” adding “We hope that he might recognize dogs as the heroes they are, too. They found survivors after the Sichuan earthquake and protected people from potential terrorists during the Olympic games. Surely they deserve more.”
