BP Pays $2 Billion So Far For Spill, Shares Down
BP has spent $2 billion so far on costs associated with the clean up of its oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the company said today. BP shares were down more than two percent Monday, because investors are concerned about how much the total bill will be for BP, including lawsuits, fines and claims of damages, which may cost additional billions, Reuters reports.
BP will likely be raising cash from banks and asset sales to make sure it has enough to pay clean-up costs, according to Reuters. BP has temporarily stopped dividend payments to shareholders, and has agreed to demands by the Obama administration to set up a $20 billion compensation fund.
