Drunk Driver Celebrates Happy Hour In Overturned Vehicle

Drunk driving can devastate families, and usually the horrific consequence of driving under the influence are nothing to laugh at. Given that no innocent third parties were involved, however, IndyPosted readers may find this particular incident as reported by Reuters humorous if not ironic.

A New Zealand motorist on an admitted four-day binge lost control of his car, crashed into a fence, and flipped over. While he was waiting for the fire department to rescue him, he did what came naturally; he popped open another cold one, according to police.

Leave it to his lawyer to try to justify this behavior:

When [the motorist] found he could not open the doors, “he had nothing else to do at that point, so he had another beer.”

The man, who tested at three times New Zealand’s legal limit, pleaded guilty to drunk driving and received a fine equivalent to about $800 U.S. The judge also yanked the man’s license for 10 months. The motorist, age 47 and a first-time offender, apparently was dealing with some serious personal issues.

Just like the U.S., the legal limit in New Zealand is 0.08 percent blood alcohol content, but the government has a proposal under consideration to lower it to 0.05 percent.
