Wildfires Destroy Homes, Trees In California

25 Houses, 15,000 Acres Burned

California wildfireWildfires have destroyed at least 25 homes and 15,000 acres in southern California’s Kern County, about 130 miles north of Los Angeles. The area is under a state of emergency, and over 2,300 people have evacuated. Firefighters have been fighting blazes near Tehachapi, fighting overnight to protect homes and to contain the inferno. Wildfires are also blazing across 6,000 acres in the Sequoia National Forest, north of Tehachapi. Over 1,000 firefighters are trying to save trees and keep the flames from spreading further. Sequoias are the Earth’s largest tree and grow in the national forest, which consists of 1.2 million acres. The fire hasn’t yet been contained, and firefighters have been struggling with wind and weather changes, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which is working with the U.S. Forest Service and Kern County Fire Department, told CNN. At least six homes have also been destroyed near the community of Riverkern, where several residents and campers were evacuated.
