Alabama Tops USA TODAY Poll
Alabama scored a touchdown in the USA TODAY Top 25 Coaches’ poll. The Crimson Tide got 55 of the 59 votes for first place from the panel of coaches of the American Football Coaches Association. Runner up Ohio State received the remaining four votes. Following the Buckeyes in the poll were Florida, Texas and Boise State. Virginia Tech, TCU, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa rounded out the top 10.
Alabama’s 2009 record was 14-0, with 1,469 points and ranked number 1. Ohio State was 11-2 with 1,392 points and ranked number 5. Ohio State was also the top preseason pick to win the Big Ten conference in voting by members of the media attending the Big Ten football media event. Under coach Jim Tressel, the 2009 Ohio State team won its fifth straight conference title and entered the Rose Bowl against Oregon, winning the game 26-17. The Buckeyes are returning 16 starters.
