The US Navy set off today from the New York harbour with their newest battleship, the USS New York, a ship built from recycled steel taken from the Twin Tower collapse in 2001.
The USS New York is a $1 billion US Navy assault vessel that was constructed with 7.5 tonnes of recycled Twin Towers steel comes in at 684ft long. The ship was commissioned in New York on Saturday.
According to TimesOnline two other ships have also been named to commemorate the September 11th attacks:
The USS Arlington was named to honour victims who died at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The USS Somerset commemorates the county in Pennsylvania where the hijacked United Airlines flight 93 crashed.
However only the USS New York was made from the towers steel. According to recent reports requests to serve aboard the ship were higher than any other vessel in the Navy with 13% of those serving aboard the crew of 361 sailors from New York, a percentage much higher than typically found for one city aboard other ships currently in service.
The ship began it’s maiden voyage by firing off a 21 gun salute near ground zero.
