On Saturday, August 28th at the TD Garden in Boston, MMA fans all over the world will have the chance to witness the rematch between current UFC Lightweight Champion, Frankie Edgar, and previous champion, BJ Penn. Before Edgar took Penn’s belt, BJ was the three-time defending champion. Broadcast for this event will be through pay-per-view (PPV) and select movie theaters. A PPV buy will allow the viewer to watch the main card live. UFC.com reports the main card as follows:
Why you should care:
There has been a lot of chatter in the MMA community surrounding both the main and co-main events. Edgar’s victory over Penn in their first bout was highly criticized due to one judge scoring the bout 50-45 in favor of Edgar while the other two judges scored it as a much closer match. The judge in question, Douglas Crosby, released a statement describing how he judged the match and the firestorm of controversy that ensued, as reported by cagepotato.com. This time around there is much more on the table. Can Penn prove to the world that he shouldn’t have lost his belt in the first place? Or is Edgar going to show the world he deserves the lightweight belt? Prediction: Penn via 3rd round TKO (strikes)
The main event should be a high-octane, energetic slug fest; but the co-main event is just as intriguing–maybe even more intriguing. Right before Edgar/Penn 2, the audience gets the pleasure of watching MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture take on MMA newcomer and perennial boxing champ, James “Lights Out” Toney in a heavyweight showdown. James Toney, knockout artist extraordinaire, feels good about his chances to put Randy Couture to sleep on August 28th. He told MMAFighting.com, “If Randy tries to grab me I’ll hit him so hard his grandparents will feel it [...] I keep reminding everybody, the fight starts standing up. To shoot you have to get close and when you do, you’re going to get hurt.” Cocky or confident? Cocky. Captain America, Randy Couture hasn’t fallen into Toney’s war of words; he has remained calm, cool and collective. Fun fact: Couture has been training MMA for over a decade; whereas, Toney has been training for 9 months. Prepare yourselves for a relentless barrage of takedowns and punches. Prediction: Couture via 1st round submission (rear-naked choke)
Questions that will be answered come UFC 118:
Will Edgar prove he is the true champion of the UFC Lightweight Division? Is it going to be “Lights Out” for “The Natural”? On Saturday, August 28th the world will find out.
