You can take away their cell phones, make them wear their seatbelts, but if you really want to make drivers pay attention to the road, you have to put a 3D image of a girl playing in the middle of the road.

The image, which is currently being used in Vancouver as part of a road safety program, is sure to startle distracted drivers, but hopefully not too much that they swerve off the road.

According to AdFreak, the image of a girl chasing her ball slowly rise from the street. As the car gets closer, the image recedes back into the pavement. If you are traveling at the posted speed limit, you should have more than enough time to stop. But if you are going faster than the speed limit, well, you’ll probably swerve, scream, swear, and possibly crash.

‘We need to expect the unexpected because anything could happen, whether it is a 3D image on the road … or whether it’s a live child or a dog running in front of the car, these are all things that we have to be able to control for in a vehicle,” said David Dunne of the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation.

Globe and Mail reports that the 3D image is being installed near a school in West Vancouver, and will be in place for one week.

Mr. Dunne says that people forget about the dangers of driving, and sometimes they need to be reminded of the physical consequences of distracted driving.

“It’s been an ongoing challenge for traffic-safety engineers to try and get vehicles to slow,” said Brent Dozzi, manager of roads and transportation. “The static messaging that we do becomes part of the landscape and it’s on the periphery.”

The 3D image is sure to get drivers attention, but hopefully it won’t distract them to the point that someone, besides the 3D girl, gets hurt.
