Despite a history of repeated denials, former 2004 vice presidential candidate and 2008 presidential candidate John Edwards admitted today in a statement released to AP that he had an affair with a campaign worker which resulted in a child. The former senator also acknowledged that he was wrong to issue denials in the past.
“I am Quinn’s father,” the former senator declared in his statement, as the second birthday of Frances Quinn Hunter approaches.
The North Carolina Democrat finally confirmed that had a relationship with videographer Rielle Hunter during which he conceived a daughter. Andrew Young, an associate of Edwards, originally claimed paternity of the child, but apparently Edwards put him up to it. Elizabeth Edwards, who is suffering with breast cancer, has so far stood by her husband.
John Edwards is under a federal investigation for alleged misuse of campaign funds. Both Young and Hunter have testified before a grand jury looking into the matter.
