Fast or Just Plain Foolish? The NHL Has a Decision to Make - Indyposted -

]]> TORONTO, CANADA—Still having yet to hit the half-way point in the season, many NHL teams—and the league in general—have an enormous problem on their hands: Concussions. And more importantly, the Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) that follows these injuries. And, these concussions did not occur when players dropped the gloves to fight—many of the injuries occurred rather innocuously.

NHL Hall-of-Famer Marcel Dionne told the Toronto Star: “We’re losing stars. This is as devastating as it can be in the NHL.”

The list of players out of action due to concussions is growing nearly every week, it seems. Pittsburgh Penguins fans anxiously awaited the return of their ace, Sidney Crosby, who suffered a severe concussion last year. Crosby did return a few weeks into this season, but has been sidelined again because of PCS.

USA Today has the long and staggering roster of NHL players who have suffered concussions and PCS just these past two months. The list includes Crosby, the Ottawa Senators’ Milan Michalek, the Carolina Hurricanes’ Jeff Skinner, and the Minnesota Wild’s Guillaume Latendresse, who returned after a concussion but left again thanks to PCS.

Perhaps the one team so far to have taken the worst “hit” from concussion and PSC is the Philadelphia Flyers. As of last night, it was announced that team captain Chris Pronger will be out for the season and playoffs because of PCS. Pronger’s career is also likely over. He now joins his teammates, offensive powerhouse Claude Giroux and forward Brayden Schenn on the Flyer’s “concussion line.”

So why are these players dropping like flies due to the same type of injury? Why are players like Pronger foolish enough to not wear a visor on their helmets? (Pronger’s concussion came from a stick to the eye.) Isn’t it foolish as well for players with concussed brains to come back too early only to get worse?

Many people point to inadequate helmets, and that could be an issue. But when the NHL, years back, changed the game—even the rinks—to make hockey “faster,” they may have made a monumental mistake. Hockey was fast to begin with. It is played on ice and all.

Hockey players work for the NHL. They wear the helmets they are mandated to wear. They changed their game to acclimate to the new, “faster” style of NHL hockey. But when is it just irresponsible to put players out there to face potential brain damage?

“Guys, when they’re coming at 100 miles an hour and they’re told to finish their checks,” says Dionne. “As a fan watching it is very frustrating for a lot of people because it’s affecting everybody. They’re afraid to change things that are going to be drastic. They shouldn’t be afraid to change things. They’ve got to deal with it.”

Clearly it is time to wise up and figure out how professional hockey can excite and still promote safety. If nothing is changed, these NHL players will end up drooling on their wives and children in some nursing home. These players would be slurring their Hall of Fame speeches, and not because they got a bit tipsy at the cocktail reception.

According to investigators, Michelle Lee Williams, of Jackson County, West Virginia didn’t get that memo, causing the ensuing sex scandal.

She went to her estranged husband, Danny Williams’, place, four doors down at the 77 Motor Inn brandishing a weapon demanding oral sex in a very classy way,”eat my pussy.”

Danny, maybe knowing what kind of horrors were located down below, turned down the offer.

His friend, Adam Watson, agreed to her request, until according to The Smoking Gun,“he became overwhelmed by horrible vaginal odor emitting from Melissa Williams.” He then decided against the act.

That’s when things got even nastier, and Melissa let them know how she really felt, pointing a lock-back folding knife at Danny, she said,

“Somebody is going to eat my pussy or I’m going to cut your fucking throat.

When Deputy Mellinger arrived on the scene he observed Williams–who, like the two men, appeared to be intoxicated–nude from the waist down. She was arrested her for domestic assault and brandishing a deadly weapon.

Williams, who was released from jail after posting $3000 bond, is next due in Jackson County Magistrate Court on February 16.

Like the 1989 Robin Williams film, Dead Poets Society, people today will talk about poetry and it’s significance. How poets shape words and phrases, skipping metaphors and similes across the pond of the mind, causing ripples in consciousness. The difference from the movie and reality is the First Annual Dead Poets Remembrance Day, ideally, takes place on dead poets graves.

The day will be officially celebrated on October 7, which is the day Edgar Allen Poe died.

Walter Skold, founder of the Dead Poets Society of America, developed the idea for the holiday after taking a 15,000 mile road trip in 2009 and 2010. Skold met with thirteen state poet laureates and documented the graves of over 600 national poets during his journey, according to National Geographic blog.

Poet enthusiasts can go to the Dead Poets Remembrance Day page to find the nearest poet’s grave. No grave near you? Then meet up anywhere and discuss the words of late and great poets.

Playing the worse game of take-backs ever, Australia’s Next Top Model title is given to Kelsey Martinovich, and then taken away. Moments later the real winner, 18-year-old Amanda Ware, took her victory sashay down the runway, according to BBC News.

The question people are asking is…was this moment really a failure of presenter Sarah Murdoch’s ear bud? Or was this a way for the show to snag international attention?

Fox said Martinovich was awarded AUS$25,000 ($24,248.52 USD) and a free trip to the US by way of apology.

The show is, of course, the spinoff of Tyra Bank’s brainchild, America’s Next Top Model where models from across the country compete for cash, prizes and a modeling contract.

With between 2 and 4 billion works sold (depending on your source), she is bested only by William Shakespeare and the Bible. Christie is also the most translated novelist in history, according to MSNBC.com.

Her books were adapted into films 27 times, as well as many TV shows and even video games.  She also published romances under the name Mary Westmacott.

Robert Plant best known for being frontman for iconic band, Led Zeppelin, has reportedly declined a reunion tour. Jimmy Page, original Zeppelin guitarist invited Plant to break it down old school in favor of going at his solo career, according to Thirdage.com.

According to ContactMusic, the 62-year-0ld will be continuing his solo efforts by headlining London, England’s Roundhouse on October 29 as part of BBC Radio 2′s Electric Proms festival. He will be performing with his new group Band of Joy- an updated version of his pre-Led group which also featured the late John Bonham. Joining the stage with him is The London Oriana Choir.

Plant won five Grammy Awards in 2009 for his album ‘Raising Sand’, which was a collaborative effort with the singer Alison Krauss.
