Toyota has recalled 170,000 Prius Hybrid cars from the Japanese market today after braking problems were discovered with the vehicles, at the same time Toyota promised to announce a global fix to the companies recent vehicle safety issues.

The “fix” announcement which will occur on Tuesday will include a detailed plan to fix the braking issues that have resulted in nearly five million vehicles being recalled in the U.S. alone, while possibly calling for yet another U.S. vehicle retail, more than likely in regards to the same Prius models affected by the Japan recall.

According to MSNBC:

The automaker has fixed the programming glitch in Prius models that went on sale since last month, but had done nothing yet on the cars sold before then, according to Toyota.

There have been nearly 200 complaints in Japan and the U.S. of drivers experiencing a short delay before the brakes kick in — a problem that can be fixed with a software programming change. The delay doesn’t indicate a brake failure.

While no one in Japan has been hurt by the breaking issue, at least four crashes and two minor injuries have been reported.

Toyota will have to stage an impressive press announcement tomorrow if they plan to keep loyal customers from fleeing to other car manufacturers, lately everything seems to be spinning out of control for the company which has always prided themselves for the reliability of their vehicles.

Toyota today announced that they have halted the sale of vehicles in the United States amid concerns that the accelerator pedal on their vehicles can stick or become stuck, leading to continuous acceleration while the driver is attempting to stop.

Over the last several months Toyota recalls have rose to include 4.3 million vehicles and with new reports of accelerator issues the company has announced the closure of vehicle sales until the problem can be determined and fixed.

The recall actually includes two issues, in one case the accelerometer can become stuck under the vehicles floor mats, while in other cases the pedal moves back to the proper position too slowly, leading to car accidents when the driver is unable to slow their vehicle at proper rates.

Current Toyota Recall models include:

2009-2010 RAV4

2009-2010 Corolla

2007-2010 Camry

2009-2010 Matrix

2005-2010 Avalon

2010 Highlander

2007-2010 Tundra

2008-2010 Sequoia

Unfortunately for Toyota the Camry is currently the best selling car in the United States, with 34,000 units moved in December 2009 alone, up 38 percent from just a year prior.

According to Toyota as of February 1st production at their six U.S. plants will stop with no plans to restart production until the issue is resolved.

If you have questions about the recall you can bring your car to your local Toyota dealership and give them a call so you can be assisted as soon as possible.
