President Obama can be seen on CNN.com speaking to reassure Americans about the new health care bill. The president’s statement was directed against strong concerns voiced by House Minority Leader John Boehner, a Republican Congressman from Ohio who’s described the bill as “Armageddon.”
“John Boehner called the passage of this bill—no need to; we don’t need to boo; I just want to get the facts—called the passage of this bill ‘Armageddon,’” Obama said. “You had others who said, ‘This is the end of freedom as we know it.’ So after I signed the bill, I looked around. I looked up at the sky to see if asteroids were coming. I looked down at the ground to see if cracks had opened up in the Earth. You know what? It turned out it was a pretty nice day.”
The day before the crucial vote on the bill passed in the House, Boehner described the health care overhaul as “Armageddon,” saying the bill will “ruin our country,” Fox News reported.
In the debate on the House floor prior to the bill’s passage, Boehner tried to persuade his fellow Congressmen to vote against it, subtly mocking Obama’s campaign motto, “Yes, We Can.” “Look at this bill, ask yourself, do you really believe that if you like the health plan you have that you can keep it? No you can’t,” Boehner said.
