Seagate Debuts First Consumer Available 3TB External Hard Drive

Storage solutions giant Seagate announced in a press release today that they have officially released the first-ever 3TB external hard drive for consumers.

The new 3.5-inch 3TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk external hard drive works with both Windows and Mac OS X systems because it includes a New Technology File System (NTFS) driver for Mac according to Seagate. That technology allows the external hard drive to be used with both Windows and Mac OS X systems without the need for a reformat.

The drives standard interface is USB 2.0 which offers a 480Mbit/sec data transfer speed rate, while there’s also the option of purchasing a separate GoFlex desktop adapter which allows it to be upgraded to USB 3.0 or FireWire 800. With the upgrade users can receive much faster data transfer rates of up to 800Mbits/sec.

The new external hard drive is aimed at consumers who are moving up to higher definition videos and photos that are becoming the standard thanks to HD cameras.

For $249.99 you can pick up the 3TB GoFlex Desk external drive with the standard USB 2.0 interface.
