Betty White could hardly get her jokes out on Saturday Night Live because the audience kept stepping on her lines. The 88 and a half year old led an SNL cast that brought back favorites like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Molly Shannon, for its Mother’s Day special.
Betty White’s Saturday Night Live appearance was due, in large part, to overwhelming support from Facebook groups. But White quickly dismantled the Facebook culture in her opening monologue by pointing out that Facebook “sounds like a huge waste of time.”
White kept the pace up throughout the hour long show, doing skits that put White in a hardcore version of Golden Girls, had her praise her muffins on NPR, and dress up like a prisoner for SNL’s “scared straight” skit.
Dave Itzkoff of the New York Times said it best when he said “All it took to reinvigorate a 35-year-old comedy show was the presence of an 88-year-old woman.”
