Xbox Offers New Treat [Video]

Gamers Get Revamped Tool

Xbox 360 wireless controller

Microsoft is offering gamers a new treat for Xbox 360. This fall, players will be able to get a wireless controller that has a new style of adjustable directional-control pad, D-pad.

The new controller was unveiled by Xbox Live programming director, Larry Hryb (who’s gamer name is Major Nelson). Hryb can be seen on a Tuesday YouTube video showing all the features of the new controller, particularly the reengineered D-pad. (See video below.)

“It is a revolutionary D-pad,”

Hryb says, demonstrating how the D-pad can be twisted to transform from a flat to a raised controller.

Hyrb also points out that Microsoft has for the first time ever made the A, B, X, Y buttons on the controller gray, in contrast to their typical yellow, red, blue or green colors.

The new controller will only be available with Microsoft’s new Play & Charge Kit scheduled to launch November 9. The kit will retail for $64.99.

Despite the new wireless controller, gamers who love playing online might be in for a disappointment. Microsoft is raising the price of an Xbox LIVE Gold membership from $49.99 to $59.99 for an annual subscription in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The 2D Game

An exercise in side-scrolling 8-bit nostalgia

Scott Pilgrim vs The World 2D Game
There’s a simple side-scrolling 2D game on the market now, bringing you back like a console time machine, back to the days when 3D was a mere concept, not a rule. Yet this game is as relevant now as Super Mario Brothers was technologically advanced in its day. The game is “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”, and it coincides with the release of the movie by the same name.

The entire Scott Pilgrim franchise is based upon a series of graphic novels, aka comic books. The plot is pretty simple. It’s boy meets girl, then boy battles the girl’s seven evil exes to, essentially, win her. The game is produced by Ubisoft and as of August 10th has been available to PlayStation 3 users. On August 25th it will become available for Xbox 360 users, too.

It’s definitely a throw-back to simpler gaming days, but it’s got plenty of action and it’s good hype for the upcoming movie. See for yourselves, c/o IGN

Xbox To Get TV Channel [Rumor]

Xbox Live

According to reports by Bloomberg.com, Microsoft’s Peter Chernin has been discussing the creation of a television channel for users of the company’s popular Xbox gaming device. The channel would be exclusively available to Xbox Live subscribers and would target a young male audience.

The channel could mean that users will see an increase in subscription prices, according to sources close to the project, so Gold members (i.e., paying members) should expect a price hike of $1 to $2 per month if the project ever happens. The channel would be jointly owned by Chernin and Microsoft, and would bring both original shows and purchased reruns to viewers. Both Microsoft and Chernin have declined to comment on the talks, but Chernin’s publicist Allan Mayer has confirmed that “Peter is talking to lots of people about lots of ideas in the digital space.”

Sources also say that Chernin approached Conan O’Brien about such a channel before the comedian signed with TBS.

Xbox users who subscribe as Gold members already pay $7.99 per month, which gives them access to online gaming. Additionally, gamers who subscribe to Netflix (an additional $8.99+ per month) can watch movies instantly through Xbox Live.

Microsoft Announces Second E3 Press Conference Focusing on Project Natal

Project natal

Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are typically considered the “big three” press conferences to watch during E3. This year, however, gaming fans may want to add a fourth press conference to their schedule. Microsoft has announced that they’ll be holding a second one this year, focusing specifically on Project Natal.

Project Natal, which was unveiled at last year’s E3, is Microsoft’s answer to the Nintendo Wii’s motion-sensitive controller. This system enables users to interact with their games without any controllers at all, sensing the motion of the player’s body. It is scheduled for release during this year’s holiday season.

Microsoft will still have their traditional press conference on during E3′s Monday events. The Natal conference will be held on Sunday night during the conference, which makes it one of the first events of E3. According to Geoff Keighley, the Natal briefing will be an all-ages event, while the other Microsoft press conference is for 18+ only, which suggests that they’ll be showcasing at least one M-rated rate. Rumor has it that they’ll be announcing an Xbox 360 Slim at some point during the week.

The bulk of E3 events will be held June 15 – 17, 2010 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Final Fantasy XIII Has Biggest First Week in Franchise History

Final Fantasy XIII

Games from the Final Fantasy franchise are easily some of the best-selling in the gaming world, and today, Square Enix announced that the latest installment – Final Fantasy XIII – has sold over one million copies in the five days since it was released in North America. That makes it the franchise’s front runner in terms of first-week sales.

Final Fantasy XIII was released on March 9, on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which is a departure from past Final Fantasy games, most of which were only released on Sony consoles. In total, Final Fantasy games have sold 96 million units world-wide. The latest game was released in Japan in 2009 and sold around 1.5 million copies during its first week of release in that country. It was the fifth best-selling game in Japan in 2009, which is impressive considering that the game was released in mid-December, very late into the year.

Reviewers have been critical of the game, saying that it is too linear and missing some elements that fans have come to know and love in all of the franchise’s games. In the future, I’m guessing that we’ll see further releases on both consoles, as this move opened the franchise to a whole new group of buyers, possibly helping to contribute to the record sales numbers.
