Japanese video game developer company Platinum Games is famous for outstanding action titles that have high production value, receive critical acclaim and create a lasting cult following. Over the years, the company has produced amazing games that not only provide awesome gameplay but please the eye with beautiful presentation and art style. This is especially true with science fiction-themed games made by Platinum, which often feature very creative designs of futuristic environments and characters. Not all of the games created by Platinum are available on Steam, so, for this reason, we present our list of the best available Steam games developed by the Platinum studio.
Vanquish
If you‘re a fan of games that feature cool sci-fi armor then Vanquish is absolutely mandatory to play. The game was directed by the father of Resident Evil series – Shinji Mikami – and first released on consoles in 2010. Due to its ongoing popularity, the title eventually arrived on Steam seven years later. The plot of Vanquish is fairly simple: a squad of U.S. soldiers gets deployed on a space station occupied by Russian ultranationalists. They must retake control of the installation before it is used as a weapon of mass destruction.
The gameplay mechanics of this revolutionary third-person shooter are all based around the use of the futuristic ARS Suit. This armor set turns the protagonist DARPA soldier Sam Gideon into somewhat of an Iron Man. Its detailed design and moving parts look extremely cool but it‘s not just for show. The Augmented Reaction Suit system allows you to slow down time during gunfights, hover mid-air or shoot down incoming missiles and grenades. The game introduced never before seen sliding mechanic as well, allowing Sam to slide on the floor with the help of jet boosts from his knees. Combine that with the slow-motion effect and you have a recipe for memorable action moments!
NieR: Automata
2017 saw the release of NieR: Automata – an action hack n‘ slash JRPG title loosely based on the first Nier game created by Cavia and published in 2010. The game is built around an anime aesthetic and serves as a great PC alternative to the successful Nintendo Switch 2019 exclusive title Astral Chain, which is also made by Platinum Games. In fact, both titles share the same game designer – Takahisa Taura.
The story takes the player to a post-apocalyptic Earth of a distant future. Mankind was exiled from its home world by machine entities from another world. To combat this threat, humanity has developed warrior androids that are deployed from space and fight on human behalf. The main character of NieR: Automata is a female android designated as 2B. The game is praised for its entertaining gameplay, stylish platforming sections and a well-written story that tackles various philosophical issues.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Serving as a spin-off to the Metal Gear game series created by the infamous Japanese game designer Hideo Kojima, Platinum Games’ Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a 2013 action title that will feel quite reminiscent to those who played Vanquish. Even though it’s a Metal Gear game, the focus of this title lies mostly in fast-paced melee combat.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance puts the player in the role of a cyborg ninja named Raiden. The story of Metal Gear series can get complicated but the good thing about this game is that it can be easily considered a newcomer-friendly stand-alone title. A lot more focus here goes on the action itself. The game can get extremely violent at moments, with Raiden being able to rip out cyborg spines to replenish his health or access the Blade Time mode to chop enemies into pieces. The player can choose the direction of katana cuts while in this state which really makes the sword combat in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance feels unique compared to similar games.
