Did you know that more than one in five American homes rely on septic tanks to manage their sewage? Unlike public waste systems, these are packaged systems that process all sewage on location, rather than going through a sewer system.

Have you ever wondered how to maintain your septic tank system to prevent issues such as sewage backup? Here are some ways that you can keep your septic tank in top shape.

Limit What You Flush

In any system, you should make sure you do not flush certain materials to prevent clogging. However, it is especially important with a septic tank system.

It is a good rule of thumb to avoid flushing anything but toilet paper. Some of the most popular items that get accidentally flushed include:

  • condoms
  • diapers
  • tampons
  • paper towels
  • baby wipes

Make sure to let your family or housemates know what not to flush. If necessary, you can put signs up in your bathrooms notifying people to put things in the trash rather than flush them down the toilet.

Avoid the Drain Field

To prevent damage to your septic drain field, you need to avoid parking on top of it or planting foliage such as trees and bushes. If you have other drainage systems, such as gutters, keep them away from the drain field for your septic tank system as well.

Record All Maintenance Work

It is important that you keep track of all maintenance work that goes on for your septic tank system. This way, if you have to switch providers or you have a major problem, you have a thorough history to reference.

For instance, if you hire septic tank cleaning services, they will likely want to know what you do regularly to ensure it works properly. Keep all of your records in a designated place, such as a folder or binder. If you want to get savvier, upload them to the cloud or digital space.

Use Less Water

It may seem obvious, but using less water can encourage a healthy septic tank system and prevent septic pooling and slow drainage. All water used by the house goes into the septic tank system, so it can get overwhelmed with too much water cycling through at once.

Buy water-efficient appliances like dishwashers and dryers. You can also make a conscious effort to take shorter showers or water your lawn less during peak months.

Keep Your Septic Tank System in Top Shape

If you have a septic tank system, you should not have to worry about sewage backup and other issues if you take good care of it. With these tips, you can maintain your septic tank pumping and have a system that will last for many years.
